some questions

for the candidates who use military families as a political stump speech:

do you really know what it means to go to funerals for loved ones?
soldiers depicted in the stained glass windows of the chapel
bugles play songs of honor
& you cry your soul out

do you really know what it means to duck in a restroom and hold her while she cries?
anything you say is just an empty promise
everyone knows her father’s tour is going to be extended
& you don’t know if he’s really will come home
you hold her while she cries
secretly thanking god your own is home and retiring after 25 years

do you really know what it means to live in a neighborhood where all the kids don’t know their parents? uncles? aunts?
reintegration programs and sesame street only help so much

do you know what it means to have your WHOLE class of high school friends come home different people?
jumping when a door is shut too loudly
screaming in their sleep
quick tempers and silent cries
we’re lucky they’re home at all

do you know??
or is this just a waiving flags, wearing pins, rockin bracelets thing?
be honest.
